Water is our most precious natural resource and is found everywhere on Earth. Around 97% of the water on Earth's surface is saline water found in oceans. The remaining 2.5% of the Earth's freshwater is stored in glaciers, polar ice caps, atmosphere, soil and even found far beneath the earth surface. Remaining 0.5% of freshwater is available in streams, rivers, lakes, reservoirs, wetlands, and groundwater resources. However, the usable fresh water supply will only be about 0.003%. Therefore, water conservation has become essential in every region to protect usable water resources and to help prevent water pollution in lakes, rivers, and local watersheds.

The practice of water conservation can be started from domestic activities such as managing water efficiency to reduce overuse, leakages, and evaporation. Saving water in domestic chores does not require expensive appliances. It requires a little knowledge of effective water use methods, recycling, and reuse of wastewater where possible as it benefits the ecosystems and communities by preventing water pollution. Therefore, water conservation has become a design trend in home and homestead designing with less impact on the environment. Demand for domestic and outdoor water consumption increases during hot, dry periods causing more usage of limited water resources and money to fulfill the need of water. Having a lush green garden or yard does not mean spending a lot of money for maintenance through extensive watering, fertilizing, and pesticide appliances. Water-saving landscapes are more effective in ways of reducing water consumption and improper irrigation practices and produce attractive landscapes with planting designs that are well adapted to local conditions.

Xeriscape designs minimize labor or regular care of plants and enhance water efficiency for home gardening through drip irrigation and adapt well to all seasons. Xeriscape garden or a yard primarily depends on rainfall. Despite its minimal water requirement, it can be full of colorful, fragrant flowers, shrubs, and plants vibrant in appearance.
